Oil Change Services

One of the most important things you can do for your vehicle is to get regularly scheduled oil changes. Oil keeps all of your engine’s moving parts operating smoothly, cleans the engine by carrying dirt, dust, and metal particles away from the moving parts, lubricates the engine, and reduces heat buildup caused by friction.

Types of Oil

There are three main types of oil used in vehicles: conventional, synthetic, and high mileage. The one that works best for your vehicle depends on your vehicle make, model, and model year.

  • Conventional oil is refined from crude oil, and it has a few additives that help keep your engine running better.
  • Synthetic oil, as the name implies, is man-made oil synthesized from ingredients that are purer with a uniform molecular structure. Because of the types of ingredients used in synthetic oil, it protects your engine better, plus it is easier on the environment. There are also some more cost-effective synthetic blends available if you need to save a little more on your oil change, but the full-synthetic oil is the best for your vehicle unless your vehicle has higher mileage on the odometer.
  • High mileage motor oil is specifically engineered to extend the life of vehicles that have over 75,000 miles. When this type of oil is manufactured, there are anti-wear additives included that extend the life of high mileage vehicles. Depending on manufacturer’s recommendation, you can get high mileage oil in conventional, synthetic blend, and full-synthetic varieties.

Frequency of Oil Changes

Your best practice for oil change intervals is dependent on manufacturer recommendations. If you do not have an owner’s manual to refer to, our technicians at Premier Fleet Commercial are happy to advise you on the interval. For most vehicles, manufacturers usually recommend getting an oil change every 5,000-7,000 miles. Some models can even go longer without an oil change. Most vehicles today use full-synthetic formulas. For older vehicles that use conventional oil, the interval is shorter, around 3,000-mile intervals for best engine efficiency.

Signs You are Overdue for an Oil Change

If you aren’t sure if you need an oil change, your vehicle can tell you in the following ways:

  • Dashboard oil change reminders in newer vehicles.
  • Old, dirty oil will be dark brown, black or cloudy on the dipstick when you check your oil while fresh oil is usually transparent and light brown or amber colored.
  • If your engine is overheating, it could be related to poor lubrication because it has to work harder.
  • If you’re hearing grinding or tapping noises when you drive, like “metal on metal” sounds, this can mean that your oil level is very low and your engine is not being protected well.
